Red Fort In Delhi

rashtrapati bhavanRed Fort is the largest Old Delhi monument, which was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi after ruling for eleven years. The foundation stone of the Red Fort was laid in 1618 and it was inaugurated in the year 1647. This historical monument has one and a half mile of circumference and is in the shape of irregular octagon having two entrances as Lahore and Delhi Gates. One of the most magnificent palaces on the earth this monument is built entirely with red stone. History of India is also said to be closely linked with this magnificent fort. The British rule is said to be started from this fort as they dethroned the last Mughal ruler Bhadur Shah Zafar, making the end of long Mughal rule and making their strong entry into the India. It was from this fort only that the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the famous speech at the stroke of midnight hour of 15th August 1947.

Present Significance

Red Fort magnificence still leaves the tourists awestruck and is still seen as an eloquent reminder of the Mughal era glory. Today also this fort is perfectly reflecting the impressive Mughal grandeur in spite being attacked by Nadir Shah and the British soldiers during the war of independence in 1857. The tranquil and peace prevailing in the surrounding of the Red Fort help the visitors and tourists to experience another realm of existence. The gate of Red Fort also hold great significance right from the first war of independence as several inspiring and motivational speeches were delivered from here by the national leaders and freedom fighters.

Special Constructions inside the Fort

The fort has special constructions in the several parts and all the constructions are named according to the functions performed in each construction. The following constructions are found in this historical fort:

  • Diwan-e-am - This was the place where the emperor held meetings with the public and used to listen to the problems of common people.

  • Diwan-e-Khas - At this place the emperor held private meetings with important people.

  • Rang Mahal - This place also known as The Palace of Colors was built as the private palace of the emperor's wives and mistresses. Well decorated with magnificent piece of art and a single marble piece carved marble, this hall was perfectly adorned with mirrors and beautiful paintings.

  • Hamams - This was the Turkish styled bathing area that consisted of three apartments that was interconnected by corridors. Hamas has marble floors and dados were inlaid with multi-colored stones making beautiful floral patterns.

  • Moti Masjid - This was the personal mosque of Aurungzeb, which was also known as Pearl Mosque and this lies to the west of Hamam. The prayer-hall of this mosque has inlaid black-marble outlines of small carpets used for prayers.
