India Gate In Delhi

rashtrapati bhavanIndia Gate, one of the most impressive structures found in the Delhi was built as a memorial to commemorate the 90,000 soldiers who died during the world war one. Located at the Rajpath in New Delhi, this 42 meter high gateway was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The foundation stone of this historical monument was laid by the Duke of Connaught in the year 1921. This monument was dedicated to the nation after the period of ten years by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. Since 1971, burning under it is the Amar Jawan Jyoti, which is a flame that burns day and night under the humongous arch in the memory of the soldiers who led their lives during the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971.

Significance in India:

India Gate was built by the British in the honor of the anonymous martyrs, who lost their lives during the First World War and Second Afghan War. Vijay Chowk or the Victory Square is the site, where "Beating the Retreat" ceremony is held every year on 29th January. Earlier known as All India War Memorial, this monument has the names of all the martyrs inscribed on its walls. Since 1971, there is the eternal soldier's flame called 'Amar Jawan Jyoti' that is continuously burning under it. India Gate and its surrounding area were designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. At India Gate only the much-awaited Republic Day event take place on 26th of January every year.

In present, India Gate has become of the most pertinent historical monument found in the city of Delhi and this is also the most visited tourist destination. India Gate witness the Republic Day parade every year on 26th of January and this is the place where latest defence technology is displayed.
